Default SEO and Traffic for WPMU Sites

Running some WPMU sites with multiple blogs and many varied topics. They each have plenty of content and gather more each day. I get some traffic, but want more.

I'm already doing the twitter/facebook pages deal and have some traffic from there as well. I just need to come up with more organic search results.

Since I can't just target a few keywords, as there are hundreds of blogs with different keywords, anyone have any thoughts/suggestions on how to go about gather more traffic for a blog farm type setup?

have you tried wp robot or the wpmu.org rss auto plugin?

i've used both and they create content on autopilot.

    PM me if you are interested in a group buy for the w p m u . o r g site

Thanks - but content is not a problem. I've got over a 1.5gb db and growing. Just trying to figure out how to get more traffic.

I can't see how to do things like link wheels, since there's so many varied blog topics.

How about setting up a blog on your MPU dedicated to on page SEO and backlinking. Teach your bloggers how to get more traffic. If you have their emails, send them some SEO and backlinking lessons.

That might just be a brilliant suggestion. Not only would it help with your traffic, but you could turn the whole thing around into a whole new business model. Only thing I would check is the percentage of publishers who are really into internet marketing. I don't think it would work with someone who's just publishing a personal blog.

Other than that, you could just select some pages you see have the most potential and somehow push (even piggyback on?) them. If you did decide to push your blogs a bit (rss submissions, podcast submissions, social bookmarks, publish your own Twitter feed, etc) and you re-aimed the whole thing at the IM community (plus doing what movieman32 suggested and monetize your webmaster audience with affiliate products), you'd have one heck of a resource imo.

How are you monetizing now, btw?

IMATA, I don't completely disagree, but even if the bloggers aren't into creating backlinks, they still want traffic to their blogs. Knowing how to optimize their posts (especially if they knew how to keyword their post titles and tags so Google knows what the article is about) would go a long way to help them rank in the search engines and get more traffic.

Actually it's just an auto blog farm - ie, there are no bloggers/publishers - all the blogs are automated by me. Just a hundred or so blogs of different topics with automated drip content.

Right now the only money is a pennies a day through adsense. The CTR is not that great, but more importantly there's just not enough impressions to make much of a difference.

Your idea is interesting, but it's assuming you can setup a WPMU site and get people to signup who aren't just auto-sploggers, which would be a huge hurdle to overcome, I would think.

    Thanks for the thoughts .
