permalinks are those links which are indicated to your website. the links which are attached after the home page URL of your website is known as permalink.

A permalink is a link to an individual blog post. So, why is this important? Well, if you ever wanted to link to a specific article, the permalink is the link you'd use. In fact, it is considered bad etiquette not to use the permalink. Linking to a blog is not going to work, as in the example above, the blog page will continue to be updated, and soon, the reference to this article will soon fall off that page.

Yes, as told by every one above permalink is a link that points to a specific post in a forum thread or blog posts. It is appended at the end of the thread url to recognize it is a part of the thread and to keep the database organized. Take this URL as an example :

The part

Code:

http://www.es5.com/blackhat-seo/blogging/what-permalink-249675/

is URL of the thread, but the part after # (post2186134) is the link to a post in the thread (and it is of your post).

So, it is especially used to point to a specific post to narrow the search in large threads in forums. :)
