Default How does Gmail cloak their links?

if you mouse over a link in a gmail email, the link's address is shown in the status bar as you'd expect. but if you click the link, it takes you to a mail.google.com address first before redirecting to the actual link. how the hell do they do that? (would be a nice way to hide affiliate links )
