Thread: HTML/CSS Tutorials/Coaching

Would there be any interest in me writing tutorials on HTML and CSS? It would be far more in depth than Tizag or W3Scools, and it would teach W3C standards. I would teach how to separate structure from presentation, accessibility, and everything else you can think of. I'm a frequent visitor of #CSS and I know my material. I've never taught anything before, but I'm up for a challenge. I could start a seperate website for it, or I could write it here (most likely here, less coding on my part). I just wanted to see if there was any interest in it, if not, then I won't do it.

Actually, I would be VERY interested. I have been looking for a decent place to learn basic web design, HTML and CSS but most of the online sources (html dog, etc) have either been too segmented (no flow between chapters), not detailed enough with aspects requiring additional explanation not expanded upon or just plain out poorly written and confusing.

It'd be great if you could write a better tutorial on the subject. I'd definitely be an avid reader if good. Web design is something I find very difficult to learn with no hands on teaching so it requires exceptional explanatory writing to make it work.

So if you do decide to make a blog or thread or whatever with detailed tutotials for ground up beginners then send me a link!

Okay, well to all that replied...let me ask you this. What dont you like about other tutorials? What do you believe is missing, that would somehow enhance your learning abilities? Do they not write clearly and concise? Is it their English? Do they seem to rant, go off-topic, or use internet lingo such as LOL, OMG, WTF, etc? What about the option of video tutorials? I've seen some on YouTube, and just the quality is horrid enough for me to close the website. I'm not much of a talker, but I can get a friend of mine to speak for the videos, as well as annotate and give examples. Basically, I'm asking what you guys would like to see, it's free, what else could you ask for?

I'd be interested if it had a bit of interactivity or some things such as designing a website as far as a theme goes. I'd be more interested in the actual design part of it rather than the css/html since I'm already fairly knowledgeable in that area.

Making something that looks good versus making something that works are two different things.

I would be very interested. Things I don't like about most TuTs... Number one complaint I have is that they assume that you have a basic knowledge of what it is you are reading a tut on. If I knew what I was doing... I wouldn't be reading a tut. So to me they should be EXTREMELY newb friendly. That being said, you only have to use the full name for something once or twice and then note that it will be the last time and you will be switching to using abbreviations. Furthermore, I think that most tuts provide fairly good info for people if they were more thorough in examples or made greater use of focused highlighting. What I mean is that when you are putting a piece of code in front of someone, they are always going to wonder what the other stuff is in the line and if it has to be set up that way. Perhaps a more thorough explanation of every step would help people like me learn everything from simple things to complex programming. Another solution to this problem may be linking from the tut to a more thorough explanation or a group of other examples. Those are a couple of things that have always come into my mind.

One of the easiest ways to do this in my mind is to write a blog about it.

Start with the simplest then move right through to the hardest. Making sure they flow. And put them into a category of wordpress like "Basics of HTML". Then if people come back half way through or something like that, they just start in the correct category.

Not only that, but once you have finished one set of tutorials on your blog, you compile them up into an ebook and post that so that people can then just download the ebook and read.

I guess the main advantage of a blog is that you can write it in segments. If you wrote an ebook, or even a full blown tut website, you have to have EVERYTHING written before you start posting. With a blog you just go one chapter at a time.
