Default the advatage of expired domains - worth it?

I'm thinking of purchasing some expired domains, to utalise their PR and links and age.

I can't find any within my niche, specifically...

ie: the domain names are not similar to what I am doing... But...

I figure I can build them up, and then link from them to my site.

If I were to try buy some, would they necessarily keep their age/PR/links?
Or do expired domains loose them in the transfer process?

In effect am I merely buying a very expensive domain and gaining no advantage from it?

    Any advice appreciated. Thanks.

Don't pages loose there PR after a content change when you get the domain only?

also: are buying expired domain's worth it?

they won't lose their pagerank as long as they keep some backlinks pointing to them, if you search what this domain used to be about before it got to your hands, you could stay almost in the same field and that way encourage backlinks to keep linking your site :-)
