Thread: Is a Link a Link

Is a link just a link - what I mean in googles eyes is a PR3 link from a youtube video held in the same regards as a PR3 wordpress comment, im not talking .org or .edu, just .com or others.

In general I would say the two may things to look at are the PR of the page and the PR of the main site. How many OBL's, where on the page the link is, and the surrounding text etc do make a difference but a lot of times those things are somewhat out of your control so looking at the PR is not a bad way to get a snap shot of what the link may be worth. Read the article though there is a lot of good info.

What should be added, however is that:

1) many people spend wayyyyy too much time trying to find the "perfect link". Personally I try to focus 80-90% of my link building time on actually building links, and 10-20% of my time on looking for new links through different footprints / methods. I believe many people do it the other way around.

2) There is no such thing as a "bad link" - don't pass over an opportunity just because it "isn't good enough"

If you aren't building links but stuck analysing, just get links.

If you have tons of d o f o l l o w links to go through which will take up your time, I would do those before touching nofollow.

Personally I never really touch the nofollow ones because I have too many others to be getting. I just don't understand the point if I already have too many places to get links from.

This is a good point but it does depend somewhat on how a person is building their links. I personally like to automate things a lot so while I do clean my lists of what I consider subpar links someone who builds their links manually will want to be more selective than I am because they want to get the biggest return on their time.

ROI is not just something to think about when spending your money. You need to think about it when spending your time because really they are the same thing.

All links are good, but not equal. Some of the references already mentioned should help you get started. It's important not to become a linkist (like a racist) and start discriminating based on such judgements. The PR0 today, could be the PR4 in the next quarter. Treat the site you are linking to though as a popularity contest though. Try to hang out with the cool kids, but say hi to the geeks. Ironicly enough, this metephor works in total reverse. The geeks are the ones with the sites that are 'cool'.. while the cool kids are.. well.. left out. Are we still talking about links?
