After the program launches, and you choose the 'use for free' without registering option, a window appears which disappears immediately after. It is after this an index.dat file is written to the ~AppData/Microsoft/Cookies/ folder with the following strings in it:

Oddly enough, Last night I did my weekly scan of viruses and whatnot and then cleared my cache and cookies. I downloaded spinnerchief and that was the ONLY thing I did last night before going to bed. Now reading this I see the same string in my cookies folder. The community owes you big time for pointing this out for us man.

Agreed. I also run spybot as well just to be extra safe.

I have run this software but I registered it and I have to say that the program itself is aboslutely awesome and I love it but this thread does concern me a bit.

Two possibilities exist, and I'm not accusing anyone just pointing out possibilities.
First one: Spinner Chief is designed to steal info and that's why it's free.

Second one: Maker of a similair program which isn't free starts spreading rumors of SC being a hacking tool causing everyone to dispose of it.

Personally, I'm not ready to convict SC just yet as it is an extremely useful tool. I might move it over to a VM envoirnment but I think that perhaps we're jumping the gun a bit with the whole "OMG, it's stealing my cookies hurr durr" stuff.

Just my two cents but has anyone tried contacting the guy who released this software in the first place? Has BHW banned him? If not, why not if he's a "Hacker"...

It would seem to me that BHW would ban him uber fast and delete his posts/software links.

We don't know if it's malware or not. The footprint may be left by something harmless. It's just a good idea to be paranoid.

    The most likely possibility

Whether or not this is true, you can't deny what is happeneing in the back end.

Again, take a look at what is happening behind the scenes, and try to explain WHY this is happening.

lol, first off the thread was removed. Second, he is not going to be banned UNTIL they prove that it is actually malicious. At first glance it certaintly appears that it is in fact a cookie stealer but I'm sure the mods want to be 100% sure before taking any action.

If it is a "cookie stealer" I'm sure you will be one of the first ones here crying for help when your paypal account gets jacked.
