Default From Wiz - Regarding The Downloads Section and YOUR Responsibility!

    Hey B-Hatters:

Most of you are aware of the recent, rather lengthy, ongoing thread regarding the SpinnerChief software that was recently shared here in the Members Download section and later deleted, due to an alert posted by a concerned member. The way it looks, it may never be conclusively proven that the perceived threat was truly a malicious attempt to infect members' machines.

As you know, my hardworking team (blackhit and peter2002) and I are extremely vigilant insofar as doing everything in our powers to warn you and protect you from software that may be a potential threat.

Before I was elected by HaRRo to become the first Downloads Moderator of BHW, anyone could post EXE's anywhere on the forum, with no VirusTotal Scan Report required. Needless to say, anyone who downloaded any EXE's faced the possibility of their machines being infected if they were not vigilant THEMSELVES and if they did not take the precaution of scanning whatever they downloaded. In fact, to my knowledge, I am the first moderator of any forum to initiate the mandatory rule that a VirusTotal Scan/Report had to be included with one's share if it contained an EXE. Since then, I have seen some other forums adopt that policy - although most of the forums bearing any similarity to BHW STILL do not make it a requirement.

Granted, VirusTotal Scans and scanning with your personal AV software, Anti-Spyware and Anti-Malware applications is not infallible, but it is better than nothing.

That being said, there are members of BHW who are not only new to internet marketing, but they BARELY KNOW HOW TO USE A COMPUTERS. They are naive in many respects and therefore put all of their faith, trust and DEPENDENCE in us (the download moderators).

Although, we, the downloads moderators, work our tails off to keep BHW as free as possible from infected applications, it NOT a good idea to place total dependence on us. YOU must take an active part in protecting your machines yourselves.

If you are planning on downloading EXE's (Executable Program files) from BHW or ANYWHERE for that matter, you had best take the time to do some Google research and learn about the use of such things as VMWare, Sandboxie, Malware Bytes Anti-malware, Hitman Pro, backing up your files, System Restoration, and more.

Does it sound like it is too much to bother with? . . . Then please do not complain to us when something happens to your machine.

Or better yet, DO NOT DOWNLOAD ANY EXE's. Ultimately, THAT is the best preventative.

We, the download moderators, will continue to work hard to prevent BHW's members from having access to infected shares, but YOU must begin taking responsibility for yourselves and the health of your computer.

Thank You B-Hatters . . . Play It Safe And Happy Computing

Thanks, Wiz. We really do appreciate what you and the other Download Moderators have done for the BHW community. I was particularly impressed with your efforts on the SpinnerChief "situation". You were acting out of responsibility, and did the right thing.

That being said, I believe all of us at BHW have a responsibility as well. What you are saying is absolutely correct. We must act as a community and actively prevent the spread of malicious files throughout the Download section.

If everyone here were to take careful precautions before downloading a file, and giving the thumbs up to the rest of us, then there wouldn't be any need for all this commotion.

    Thanks again.
