Thread: setting up an unmanaged vps server

Hi,

I need some help basically.
I have cpanel hosting from www.bluelemonhost.com
I am going to transfer to http://www.intovps.com/
The problem is that I do not know server management and want to learn and so will not buy cpanel with them.

How can I learn server management? I tried googling, not much help. Any hints, ideas, help?
Also can I know of any free open source things I can install on CENTOS 32 to control everything, like cpanel, including DNS, email(very important)?
I also want to know how to move over my emails.

Work in progress and want to learn.

best way is to install webmin

If you're going to learn to manage your own server... I'd strongly suggest NOT doing it with a production site (one that you plan on using to make money) To many things can go wrong that would cause the server to get compromised.

Best bet is do one of the following:

1: if you have spare parts around your house, build a run of the mill desktop and install centOS (or w/e o/s you are used to using on a server)
2: get a cheap root access vps somewhere for like 5 - 10 bucks.

For windows: *gags* i hate microsoft stick with a *nix/*nux O/S



If this is for a production, I STRONGLY recommend a control panel, cpanel is one of the best IMO, but it really holds your hand and you dont learn anything.

Webmin and E-Box are decent runner ups.

If the costs of cpanel is the issue, a cheaper alternative would be DirectAdmin.

I just want simple management.
webmin seems to be the solution as someone said, looks great and free

just need to figure out how to install now, lol

This guy does a nice video, installs virtualmin (which has webmin) on a vps.
