Nah, use a wordpress plugin called seopressor... it will guide you on the right road to density.. you can find it here
you wont get banned or sandbox. if you use wordpress...get the seopressor like jgut12 said. but the very best thing to do...is search the forum for IBP (internet business promoter) and use that for your top 10 optimization. it covers keyword density, word amounts, meta information etc...and give you suggestions on how to solve em all.
Don't waste too much time with keyword density ... it's not really a problem as long as you mention the word a few times (2-3) per 400 words I've always been able to rank.
Ranking in the SERPs is more a function of Off Page Optimization, than it is of Onpage factors.
Too much credit is given to Google, as if it's the authority on ranking.
Most of what Google knows, is learnt retroactively, i.e. after the fact.
Just go about with your backlinking strategy, go for High PR backlinks, have a clean site/theme layout, etc.
If I were you, I'd create buffer backlinks using the usual web2.0 sites - zimbio, posterous, squidoo etc... have 10-20 of those, then create backlinks to them like crazy.
In time, you'll find that, even though your site might show limited backlinks in relation to authority websites, you'll be kicking those site's asses to kingdom come!
Right now I have a PR1 domain that's got over 10 pages ranked #2 & 3 for highly competitive keywords, all because I wrote single articles for each keyword, spun those about 20 times, posted them to these web2.0 sites, then backliked the hell out to those web2.0 sites using profile links and at times xrummer!
I could go on ad nauseum about sites with little to now keyword density, yet outranking the so called bigwigs in the SERPs.
Backlinks, that's the biggest secret, but it's also how well you structure those backlinks that matters.
Good luck, and Merry Christmas
