Google loves keyword rich domains. There is direct traffic as well if you have the perfect dot com domain.
Having a keyword rich domain name is not imperative at all. If you find one that is keyword rich then yeah, go for it, but you certainly don't need it to rank well.
Experience and continuous trials i would say
from experience I can say a domain with your keyword in it will help your rankings immensely and probably means less work for you in order to get to the top.
